As a child gets older, there are certain words they are expected to know by each grade level. Kids move from 1 – 2 letter words to more complex words. Second grade is an eye opener.
Did you know that the more a child reviews their sight words, it increases reading fluency? That’s right, sight words help children read. The more they see them, the better readers they become.
I know that kids are still trying to catch up due to the year they lost at school because of the pandemic. Being out of school and expecting to go back and pick up where they left off can be tough.
As educators and parents, we understand this. We build on the knowledge they learn in 1st grade to prepare them for their 2nd grade words.
What’s the point of sight words?
I bet you have heard why do I need to know these words? Almost like fractions, I will not use this when I get older. You do without realizing it. If you’re a baker, you understand. If a recipe calls for ¾ cup of something, you don’t use one cup.
The same with sight words.
We are in a digital world. Let’s say you’re traveling somewhere and google maps says turn right on Turnip street. Well, you have to read the street name to turn right. Sometimes google maps isn’t reliable and you have to use your own instincts.
Just turning here and there is not enough. You can end up in a ditch. So What’s the point of sight words? To help you understand what is going on around you and not just take guesses. A 5 mins trip shouldn’t take you 1 hour, unless traffic is insane.
List of 2nd grade sight words
Every year, students are sent home with a list of words they are expected to learn throughout the school year. Some students are able to learn these words within the school year and some need more time.
That’s ok.
Each child learns differently.
That is why we provide a variety of resources to help children learn their sight words.
Our second grade sight word worksheet pdf is a printable list of sight words based on the state standards for kids to practice at home or at school. With this repetitive motion, kids will know these sight words before the end of the school year.
You decide how they learn them. You can give them a few words at a time (which is best) or let them review the whole pdf.
We also have high frequency sight words and sight word stories practice as an extra bonus.Sight word stories can be used with kindergarten sight words and first grade sight words. Not only can students remember their sight words, but also create stories using their printable sight words.
Nothing is as good as seeing a confident child learn their sight words and to know how to use them correctly in sight word stories.
